Leeton will take on the Griffith Blacks at No. 1 Oval in what is sure to be a close and somewhat fiery contest.
The Phantoms are going through another rebuilding period after losing several of their 2018 players, but coach Seru Rogo said he still had plenty of talent to work with.
"We have been training very well this week," he said.
"Yes we did lose a lot of our players from last season, but we also have a lot of new ones coming in.
"We're looking good so far."
Timothy Rolls has again been selected as the first grade captain in 2019, with Rogo confident his experience and skills will help lead the side on the field.
He said the side was eager to start the season off on a good note.
"It's definitely great to have the derby straight up ... it's always a good match between Leeton and Griffith," Rogo said.
"It will be tough. I've told the boys they are going to make mistakes, but it's how they react and pull themselves up that's important.
"First games are always hard. You never play fully how you want to.
"I think as long as we can concentrate on limiting any mistakes and playing our game we will be right."
The women's 10s side will also step out for the first time, as well as second grade.
