While attending Leeton High School some years ago, we lived in Yanco, where I learned typing from the nuns after school.
This proved to be a good move and as soon as I left school in 1966 I walked into Richards Department store (now Centrepoint Arcade) to see if there were any jobs going.
I left there with a job in the office starting the following Monday.
In those days you left school one day and got a job the next - sadly, things have certainly changed!
I stayed at Richards for eight years until we were blessed with two children.
I loved working at Richards and made lots of lifetime friends and had so much fun over the years.
Over the Christmas holiday period, on two different occasions, we organised mini reunions and caught up with some ex-work mates.
We all had a great time recalling old times and discussing some of the characteristics of staff members and how the store was set up.
Richards was the hub of the community.
With a variety of different departments, it was really a one-stop shop and included individual departments for ladieswear, menswear, footwear, electrical, haberdashery, manchester, groceries, deli and downstairs were the hardware and furniture departments as well as the staff rooms.
The office at the back of the store handled a huge array of transactions.
Nearly everyone had a monthly account, laybys were very popular and the banks paid Richard a sizeable amount to cash pensions and a variety of cheques each day.
Everyone was paid by cheque as direct debit was unheard of in those days.
I have so many fabulous memories and I could reminisce all day if space permitted!
If you were fortunate enough to shop at Richards Department store, what was your favourite memory?
