Two separate double demerit periods will be enforced by police across the state thanks to the Easter long weekend, as well as for Anzac Day.

The Easter double demerit period will apply from midnight Thursday until midnight on Monday.

For Anzac Day, the double demerit period will apply from midnight on April 24 through until April 28 inclusive.

Leeton Shire Council road safety officer Steph Puntoriero encouraged motorists to be safe over the coming weeks.

"Easter and Anzac Day are both in the school holidays this year and many local people will be heading off to see family and friends, making use of the public holidays," she said.

"Don't trust your tired self when setting off on a journey.

"There is no excuse for unsafe behaviour on the road because it can have tragic and life-changing consequences."

Ms Puntoriero said many drivers weren't aware fatigue was one of the top three killers on NSW roads, along with speeding and drink driving.

"The key message for all drivers is that you don't have to be severely fatigued to impair your driving ability, you can simply just be tired," she said.

"Tired from a long day, tired after a big night, tired from concentrating on the road while the kids yell in the back seat.

"The risk is even greater when you are driving at times when you would normally be asleep, as well as in the early to mid-afternoon."

A fatigued driver is six times more likely to die in a crash than a well-rested driver and fatigue crashes are twice as likely to be fatal than other crashes because you can't brake while you're asleep.
