NAIDOC Week was officially launched on Thursday morning before a huge crowd at the Leeton Visitor Information Centre.
School students, community members, stakeholders, police and more all gathered for the occasion, which had a heavy focus on this year's theme "Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let's work together for a shared future".
Leeton Shire Council mayor Paul Maytom spoke about the need for the community to work together to ensure Aboriginal and Indigenous people are given a voice and the recognition they deserve in the Australian Constitution.
"This is an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of Indigenous Australians throughout our communities," he said.
"The theme acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have always wanted an enhanced role in decision making (as part of) Australia's democracy."

Schools from throughout the shire had been invited to create an artwork for the event, which were on display on the day, receiving plenty of positive comments.
The morning was rounded out with a shared morning tea.
NAIDOC Week activities will continue with a family fun day at Gossamer Park on July 11 from 11am to 2pm.
