Following a series of fires in 1892, 1906, 1914, 1923 and 1927, which destroyed most of the colonial-style buildings in Benerembah St, Whitton's main street was rebuilt during the 1930s with Art Deco style architecture.
Some of those buildings still remain there today. Inspired by the Art Deco Festival, some research was carried out around the Art Deco history and a display has been put together at the museum. A self-guided map with written information was also created for anyone who would like to drive around and see the existing buildings. This has opened up new conversations with new bits of information being gathered. One of our visitors, who travelled with the vintage cars, has a family link to Whitton and is going to provide new photos and information which will add to the overall story.
In other museum news, the museum has been successful with two recent grant applications, one for new toilet amenities and one for significant signage updates. The committee is looking forward to seeing these projects completed.
The museum has new hours and will be open this weekend - Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 1pm.
Open hours: Open Weekend 1st Saturday & Sunday of each month, 10am to 1pm. Friday, 10am to 4pm (except open weekend week) Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 12pm to 2pm.
