Mrs Whittaker, who at 93 is the Leeton RSL Women's Auxiliary president, traveled to Canberra last week to be part of the Honouring Women United by Defence Service event on August 14.
In 1944 Mrs Whittaker joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force in 1944 for two years of service and is also a war widow.
The aim of the event was to highlight the service women like Mrs Whittaker have given to their community and country.
Mrs Whittaker remains active in several Leeton shire community groups and has received many accolades over the years for her hard work.
Her daughter Lynne Pygram and granddaughter Robyn Whittaker attended the events in Canberra with her, proudly watching on as she laid wreaths at the Australian War Memorial, as well as enjoying a dinner honouring herself and the many other women in attendance.

"It was really special ... I don't think I stopped crying throughout the whole thing," Robyn said.
"Grandma felt really proud to be part of it all. She doesn't really like recognition, but she said it was still a great honour to be nominated to be part of this event.
"She was definitely made to feel really special.
"Beccy Cole (an Australian country singer) also dedicated a song to her."
