Held every year and based on the town's excellent network of bike tracks, Bike Week always produces family friendly activities with the underlying message of bike safety.
Bike Week promotes cycling in general and it advantages, either for exercise, transport or pleasure.
The Leeton Shire event will be held on Sunday, September 22 and will be a family fun day celebrating all things cycling.
Registrations will be taken from 10am on Sunday at the bike training facility in Palm Avenue, near the skate ramp, for all of the Bike Week activities being provided. This is also when the first Cycling Australia workshop begins.
The workshops will provide children aged five to 14 years the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to help them ride safely.
Bookings and pre-registration for this workshop are essential as there are only limited places available.
In terms of the day's rides, participants can choose to ride or walk along any of the existing shared path routes, with maps provided. For experienced cyclists there are on-road routes of varying distances. There will be rides suitable for all levels of fitness and riding ability.
All cyclists must wear a correctly fitted helmet and children under 14 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
Participants should ensure their bikes are in good working order. There will be free bike maintenance checks provided by Eurells of Leeton.
All participants should bring a water bottle to ensure they remain hydrated through the morning.
The various rides and the workshops will conclude at noon, back at the bike training facility.
They will be followed by activities and lucky draw prizes, and the design-a-helmet competition winners will be announced.
There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks available for purchase. Activities will conclude at 1pm.
For details on this event and to register for the Cycling Australia workshop, contact Leeton Shire Council road safety officer Stephanie Puntoriero on 0427 837 974 or stephaniep@leeton.nsw.gov.au.
A basic guide to start riding
THE first thing for a new rider to do is make sure that their bike is the right size for them.
It goes without saying their bike must be roadworthy (however there is no bicycle roadworthy inspection or certification), with working brakes and a warning device such as a bell.
At night or when visibility is poor, a bike must display a white light (steady or flashing) on the front and a red light (steady or flashing) to the rear.
These night lights must be clearly visible for at least 200 metres.
The bike must also have a red reflector to the rear.
It is compulsory for riders (and any passengers) to wear a correctly fitted, approved helmet when cycling. An approved helmet will be marked with an Australian Standards sticker.
The helmet must fit firmly and comfortably to protect a rider against head injury.
