Kaitlin is of only few from across the country who has been selected to attended the 2020 Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science in Adelaide in January.

She will spend nine days of her break learning, studying and even presenting about food, nutrition and biodiversity.

"It's only for Aboriginal students, so I'm pretty excited to be chosen," the current Leeton High School year 10 student said.

"I'll be doing field work and lab work.

"I also have to do a presentation in front of professors, university (staff) and politicians.

"That part I'll be a little bit nervous about, but it should be a good experience."

Kaitlin was asked by her science teacher whether or not she would like to apply for the program.

Once learning what it was about she jumped at the chance and is looking forward to seeing what knowledge she will bring home as a result.

The summer school has a rigorous academic strand provided by local researchers, as well as a cultural and personal development.

It will also include tailored cultural activities run by local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, which will help students to engage with communities and knowledge, and connect more deeply with their own cultural understandings.

Kaitlin has big dreams when it comes to her future once she completes her schooling and the Higher School Certificate.

"When I finish school I would like to become a psychiatrist, but I am definitely interested in the food and nutrition side of it," she said.

"So I'm doing subjects around all those areas.

"(At the summer school) I hope to gain more knowledge on food and nutrition and biodiversity.

"I'm really interested in all of that." Kaitlin is already looking forward to the event and is thankful she's been given the opportunity.

"When I found out I had been accepted, I was really happy, I was jumping up and down," she said.
