A swathe of activities greeted visitors and students at Whitton-Murrami Public School as Grandparents Day was celebrated in fine style, while student Travis Newman has had his own achievements marked after receiving a special award.

Travis recently received a NSW Children's Week award for bravery during a special presentation. Travis was nominated by his school and classmates after his brave fight with a cancer diagnosis.

Whitton-Murrami Public School principal Deb Morden was moved by the students request to nominate Travis.

"While we never thought Travis would win, it was a nice gesture by the students," she said.

"We sent the nomination off and I honestly had forgotten about it until I received the phone call from the Advocacy for Children and Young People informing me Travis had been successful."

Meanwhile, the school was a hive of activity recently when it hosted a large Grandparents Day celebration.

Held at the school thanks to a grant procured by Leeton Shire Council, the day attracted huge numbers of grandparents, community members and residents from Carramar.

The day was an interactive one between the students, their family members and other residents.

Activities included tours of the Whitton museum, a worm farm and composting station, an environmental study in neighbouring bushland, seed planting which had every child go home with their own seedling, tai chi, an AFL clinic and much more.

Mrs Morden said all of the bases were covered on the day, with entertainment and delicious food also on the menu.

"What I enjoyed about it was seeing everyone together," she said.

"It was a great opportunity for the children to connect with their grandparents or, if they didn't have one there on the day, with other members of the community.

"The grant also allowed Carramar residents to come out, which was great. They don't have a bus, so having them here was very special and we're pleased the grant from council was able to help out in that area too.

"It was a really special celebration and one I am sure everyone will remember."

Grandparents Day is a Department of Education initiative that celebrates the role grandparents and older people play in society - both the things they have done, and the things they keep doing.

Mrs Morden said this year's event would be hard to top in 2020.

"We're just really grateful to have had the grant so we could hold such a fun celebration for everyone," she said.

"It was a fantastic day and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did."
