Lakaya, who has commenced year 12 this season, was recently announced as a recipient of a prestigious Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute School Science Award.
Lakaya was surprised to find out she had received the Victor Change award.
"It's a bit exciting because I didn't think I was really that good at science," she said.
"I didn't really expect to get it at all.
"I've always had an interest in science. Since the start of high school I started enjoying it more."

The Victor Chang award is given to a student who has shown excellence in the field of science.
Named after the late cardiac surgeon and pioneer of modern heart transplantation, Dr Victor Chang, these awards were established to celebrate young, gifted students and to foster growth in scientific studies.
This year the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute celebrates a momentous 25 years as the home of heart research. This milestone is not only a celebration for the science community, but for the future generation of researchers who will continue the life-saving medical research.
The good news hasn't stopped there for Lakaya.
She has also been successful in being accepted into the University of NSW science extension mentor program.
This came complete with a $1650 scholarship and will mean Lakaya will spend time at the university in Sydney during the upcoming summer holidays for a week.
"It's like a summer camp type thing where you get to speak to mentors, go to lectures and just see what it's like there," she said.
Lakaya is currently studying the subjects of biology, investigating science and is about to start extension science.
She said science was starting to become more popular among students as they realise the many pathways it can take them down.
"During junior years people don't really look at science too much, but it is a lot of fun and it can lead to lots of things," Lakaya said.
With Lakaya starting year 12 comes the inevitable questions of what she would like to do upon completion of her HSC.
"I've sort of been tossing up a few things, but I don't really know yet," she said.
"It will be hopefully something science-related though."
