I love moments in my life that inspire me and allow me to see things differently. Some months back, I was so impressed by the courage of one young lady with a disability who came to our workplace to ask if she could be given the opportunity for work experience. She came prepared with her resume and spoke about her desire to build her skills.
How awesome is that! She took a great risk to be vulnerable, but the outcome was positive and we were thrilled to provide that opportunity.
What continued to make me feel inspired was to know that our workplace, NSW Department of Primary Industries, aims to build a more supportive workplace that is accessible to everyone.
This brave young lady's first step opened the door to opportunity, and I was able to then provide a volunteer work experience for a young lad as well. We are now working toward an opportunity to engage in a traineeship and paid work for these two young people, who really add value to our workplace.
So, take the time to consider the possibility of getting to know someone and give them an opportunity you are opening the doors to a treasure trove of opportunity for yourself, others and your community.
Feeling included can sound like this: "When you have a disability, knowing you are not defined by it is the sweetest feeling." - Ann Strike.
