Leeton shire is home to many spots that are family-friendly for those looking to escape the heat at home this summer.
For those who may have even had to cancel holiday plans while the bushfire crisis continues to rage, there's no need to despair, there's still plenty to do in our own backyard.
Murrumbidgee River
THERE'S plenty of "beaches" residents can explore while taking a refreshing dip in the water of the Murrumbidgee River.
With many trees around, there's plenty of shade to have a picnic or laze about on a towel with a good book.
Fishing is also an option and the more adventurous can get the boat out and have a go at water skiing.
Those heading out to the river should always be mindful of their surroundings, practice water safety tips and should not leave any rubbish behind.
Leeton pool
THOSE looking for a more central place for a swim this summer should look no further than the Leeton pool (unless they are among the lucky who have one in their own backyard).
It's a cheap option and there's plenty of shade and grass to relax, not to mention smaller pools for the little ones.
The kiosk is also open for snacks and the grassy areas also have plenty of room to kick a ball around or play a bit of backyard cricket.
On a more mild summer day, why not take a walk around the town circle walking trail, finishing with a nice, refreshing swim as a reward for your hard work.
The pool is also available for lease for private functions after normal closing times. Making a booking with Leeton Shire Council on 6953 0927.
The pool is set for an upgrade at the end of summer, so now is the time to get in and enjoy the pool as it is today before it's given a much-needed makeover.
For those living in the Whitton area, there's also the pool located in that town, which is another top spot to whittle away a summer's day.

Leeton shire parks
THERE'S many shady parks scattered throughout Leeton shire with plenty of play equipment for the kids and barbecue facilities to cook up a sausage sizzle lunch.
However, the crown among these facilities is McCaughey Park in Yanco, which has all of these things but also its very own splash park.
The splash park has been popular among children and adults looking to cool off and it doesn't cost a cent.
There's a small walking track around the pond at this park, but you are not allowed to swim in this water. However, it is still nice to look at and enjoy that way.
Gogeldrie Weir
GOGELDRIE Weir is an oasis in the desert as they say.
The complex has accommodation available, but residents can also visit at their leisure.
There's plenty of room for a family barbecue or picnic - the electric barbecues are free to use.
Shady trees and lawn areas provide the cool spots you're seeking, and there's also space for a game of footy, cricket or soccer.
Kayaks and bikes can be hired from the office. Of course with the Murrumbidgee River right there, all of the usual water sports, fishing and natural scenery abounds.
Day visitor entry fee of $2 per person applies, but those aged under five are free.
Camping facilities are also available at a cost.
Roxy Theatre
THE Roxy Theatre provides an ideal space to kick back, relax and watch a movie in cool air-conditioning.
Take some snacks along and enjoy the latest screenings throughout the school holidays.
Apart from the weekend movies, extra dates and times have been added to cater for those looking to escape the boredom during the school holidays.
