The Sportsperson of the Year awards will again be held as part of the shire's official ceremony where a Junior Sportsperson of the Year and Senior Sportsperson of the Year will be crowned.

"The achievements of Leeton athletes, particularly in the junior ranks, continues to amaze judges, particularly when the small population of Leeton is taken into consideration," awards chairman Tony Reneker said.

"There are a number of juniors excelling in their chosen sport, competing for their state at a national level which is a remarkable effort in itself."

Tess Staines is one of those in the mix for the junior nod this year, having already won the title in 2016.

She will again be hard to beat having been chosen to represent the NSW Country Women's team and then NSW under 18s in rugby league.

However, the likes of Tallis McMillan who represented NSW in the under 12s AFL side and Charlie Lamont, who represented ACT/NSW in the under 15s NSW country cricket team, also have outstanding credentials.

Then, when you consider the Crelley siblings - Paris and Angus - who both represented NSW in AFL, as well as excelling in other sports locally, it is clear the judges will have a most difficult decision to make.

"In the seniors, the decision will also be a difficult one when the efforts of some of our residents are considered," Reneker said.

"Leeton's Matt Watson was the only Australian to compete in and finish the Swissman Extreme Triathlon, which is renowned for being extremely tough.

"Rod Emerson will also come under the judge's attention after finishing runner-up in the Handiskins National Championships held in May, which theoretically meant he was the second-best amateur golf player in the country.

"The outcome of the judge's consideration will no doubt be eagerly looked forward to and whatever the result all those nominated can be very proud of their achievements."

All nominees have been encouraged to attend the awards ceremony on Australia Day.
