The Leeton product returns to the teams for the first time since July and will be hungry to prove himself ahead of the Olympic Games.
Pietsch has 14 caps to his name but has struggled with injury problems since making his debut in 2017.
Coach Tim Walsh is pleased to have the 21-year-old back in the side for New Zealand's leg of the World Series.
"It's great to be welcoming back Dylan Pietsch into the squad," Walsh said.
"Dylan has been working very hard following his injury and making sure that he is back in form.
"He adds, speed and ferociousness in defence that highlights his work rate across the park.
"There is a new format for us to contend with in Hamilton, but Sevens is all about adapting to the conditions and the whole squad is looking forward to putting what we have worked on out on the park."
Australia's first game is against Argentina on January 25.
The men's series has a new format with the top team of each pool progressing straight away to the semi-finals in a winner takes all battle across the pool stages.
Fiji and Samoa are also in their pool.
