Council has formally endorsed its new Community Participation Plan, which is actually a requirement under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

The purpose of the plan is to provide a single point of reference for the community that sets out all of council's community participation requirements under land use planning legislation, including all minimum mandatory exhibition timeframes.

It seeks to provide opportunity for those potentially impacted by any development to comment on possible impacts and will aim to ensure the needs and concerns of the community are identified and addressed where possible.

The idea will be to ensure the community is informed about planning matters that affect it, but not also that, in a way that is easy to understand and in plan language.

The plan was placed on public exhibition late last year and was formally adopted last month after no submissions or comments were received from residents, allowing it to go ahead with no fuss.

It is not the only new document making its way into council's files of late.

Council has introduced a new online community directory for the shire.

The directory will provide a user-friendly way for residents to find information about services and community groups available across the shire.

It currently contains only a snapshot of the services and groups operating in Leeton.

All community groups and non-profit organisations are encouraged to enter their details online as soon as possible to promote their services, activities and facilities.

Council's manager community services, Wendell Peacock, said the directory aimed to be a comprehensive listing of local emergency services, government agencies, public facilities, not-for-profit organisations, and sporting and special interest groups.

"The new directory will bring a broad range of community service information into a single location to make it easier for people to find the many services and supports that are available in our community," she said.
