A man has been sent to jail for stealing bacon and eggs, almost $20 worth of goods.
Brendan Barnes, 29, appeared before Griffith Local Court on Wednesday via a video link from Junee Correctional Centre charged with shoplifting.
Barnes was seen by an shop assistant leaving a Leeton grocery store in October after browsing the shelves and not paying for anything.
A check on the security cameras revealed he had taken the two breakfast items of the shelves and bagged them.
I'd like to preface that this is need not greed, and he plead guilty on that basis.Piers Blomfield
When investigating police officers went to his house, he tried to show them receipts for the items but the dates and times did not match.
Piers Blomfield, Barnes' legal representative, argued the theft was a matter of "need not greed."
Magistrate Joy Boulos agreed that while it wasn't a very serious theft, it occurred against a background of sophisticated fraud and dishonesty offences.
"Mr Barnes is a fraudster and his history is riddled with dishonesty... it is his modus operandi," she said.
Noting he was currently serving a prison sentence, she gave him one month jail time to begin on February 12.
