AFL NSW-ACT has endorsed the return to training in small groups and informed leagues and clubs across the state on Thursday afternoon.

Clubs have been strongly recommended that a minimum one-week preparation and education phase take place, meaning training could resume for some as early as next Thursday night.

All clubs have been given the green light, meaning both juniors and seniors, bar Auskick, are able to train in three groups of 10 on one ground.

Netball can also return to training, in line with the Netball NSW guidelines.

AFL Southern NSW regional manager Marc Geppert says it is the news everyone has been waiting for.

"This is fantastic news for clubs as it's the first formal announcement around our return to play framework," Geppert said

"Obviously it's the first step towards getting our footy and netball clubs back on the track to get a 2020 season underway."

While training has been approved, there is still no word on when the Riverina or Farrer League seasons will begin.

But AFL NSW-ACT remain in discussions with the NSW Government about a return to competition.

"We will continue to work closely with the NSW Government around contact training and competition over the coming days and weeks," he said.

"It's the first step in order to recommencing our competitions in 2020 in whatever format that might be."

To resume training, clubs must adhere to AFL NSW-ACT's Return to Small Group Training Protocols, and in adherence to the Public Health Order.

That involves clubs appointing a COVID safety officer, that has to complete the Australian Government's COVID-19 Infection Control Training prior to the recommencement of any club activity.

Clubs must also consult with local councils before resuming training.
