About 1.20am on Saturday, police were patrolling in Leeton when they stopped a 22-year-old man who was on foot near the intersection of Whitton Road and Dundas Street.
The officers asked the man what he was doing at this time, saying he was evasive with his answers, before telling them he was "heading into town".
Murrumbidgee Police District crime co-ordinator Sergeant Cherie Knox said it was at this point the man told police he was carrying a knife.
"When asked why he was carrying the knife, he told police he had bought the knife from a friend," she said.
