Julie Withers started as the school's chaplain last term, marking the first time Wamoon Public has been part of a chaplaincy program.

The school had to put forward a case showing why this program was needed and already it is paying dividends.

Students are finding a confidant in Ms Withers, while also learning new skills and taking part in experiences together.

"A school chaplain helps to take care of the social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of children," she said.

"I come alongside teachers and staff and help the children through different programs and support.

"You're almost a neutral person in the school. Someone the students can come and talk to and feel comfortable with."

With students preparing to embark on a program called SPARC (social skills, purpose, awareness, resilience and confidence) as part of Ms Withers' role, the difference can already be seen among students.

"They love having her here and you can really see the students are comfortable with her," principal Matt Collins said.

"Even as staff we find we are going to her and bouncing ideas off her as well. It's really great."

Ms Withers also spends time with children doing activities such as gardening and cooking, teaching them valuable life schools in the process.

The program will continue at Wamoon for at least three years.
