That was the response from Leeton RSL Sub-branch president Peter Williams after discovering a disgraceful burn out etched onto the lawn of the Leeton cenotaph on Saturday morning.

He labelled the act as "disrespectful" and was particularly angered by the lack of accountability shown by those responsible.

In a further kick to the guts, Saturday also marked 75 years since the end of World War II.

The burnout was noticed and seen by many in the community throughout the weekend, with many taking to social media to lay down their own disgust at the act.

"It just shows a lack of respect ... it beggars belief as to why something like that has to happen," Mr Williams said.

"Whether it's deliberate or just an act of foolishness, I don't know."

Mr Williams had some strong words for those responsible.

"A lot of people died for you to have the 'privilege' of doing this ... it was your choice," he said.

"It makes a mockery of the people who did die."

Leeton Shire Council mayor Paul Maytom shared the sentiments of Mr Williams.

He said CCTV cameras in that area, including from across the road at the Roxy Theatre, were being examined to help identify those responsible.

Both men encouraged those involved to hand themselves in and apologise to the community.

"It's really sad ... what possesses to do someone to do that, I'm not sure," councillor Maytom said.

"Looking at the wheel marks it doesn't appear to be an accident.

"I know there are a lot of people out there in community who are very upset about this.

"It's not a good look for our town."
