With this in mind, Mr Smith is taking part in the Startlight Children's Foundation Tour de Kids throughout September where he will raise money and ride 1000 kilometres throughout the month.
"I had a young bloke who was pretty crook when he was little, so that is the motivation behind it for me," he said.
Mr Smith is already an avid cyclist, regularly riding throughout the week with others in town and racing on weekends where possible.
However, he has added a twist to his fundraising as part of the 1000kms during the month.
Mr Smith originally set out to raise $500 for Starlight and said if he could reach that goal he would ride to Wagga and back in a day to raise even more awareness for the organisation.

Having now already raised $1000 and still plenty of time remaining, Mr Smith has committed to the challenge he set himself.
He said other riders would also be joining him on the journey to Wagga and back for support, as well as for safety purposes on the road.
"I'll do it at the end of the month ... I'll try and make it so that I'm reaching the 1000km just as we get back to Leeton from Wagga," Mr Smith said.
"I think 1000kms is a lot, but I'm getting pretty close to doing that every month now as it is, so it should be pretty doable."
In order to reach the 1000km total, Mr Smith will need to average about 33.33km throughout the 30 days of September.
Tour de Kids was founded in 2001 by four friends who had a shared passion for cycling and a desire to help others.
Now a national fundraiser, the event is open to all ages across Australia.
The challenge encourages riders on all bikes, riding everywhere in Australia to help give happiness to sick kids.
"That's what it's all about for me ... just raising that awareness of Starlight and helping sick kids," Mr Smith said.
