Leeton's Jenny Brumfield addressed council's ordinary meeting last week to try to persuade councillors to either keep the Rotary rotunda in Chelmsford Place or at the least repair it and move it to Rotary Park, saying there could be no other appropriate place for it.

While council has now pushed forward, giving the draft design plans for Chelmsford Place the tick of approval, deputy mayor and CBD enhancement chairman councillor George Weston told Mrs Brumfield the Rotary rotunda would be retained in a proper manner.

Mrs Brumfield said there was a lot of history tied up with this rotunda, not to be confused with the heritage band rotunda in Chelmsford Place, saying those responsible for its construction who were now deceased "would be turning in their graves" at the thought of it being moved.

Council said it had considered all options and listened to community feedback when it came to the final plans for the upgrade of this area.

However, it will require extra funding to complete all of the phases set out in the design.

Council director of operations Peter Keane said various grant applications had already been lodged and felt reasonably confident more money would be awarded.

In the event insufficient grant funds are secured, council will allocate up to a maximum of $200,000 from the infrastructure reserve for the full development.

To date, council has secured $437,617 in grant funds towards the costs for the redevelopment of the first island (near the memorial roundabout).

It is estimated the redevelopment will cost approximately $1.2 million.

"The majority of public feedback received was in favour of the design, with councillors agreeing the designs will transform Leeton's CBD to create a vibrant greenspace and an iconic entry to Leeton's CBD while celebrating our history and leaving a legacy for future generations," Cr Weston said.

"In regards to the current Christmas tree in Chelmford Place which is in a poor state, council will be seeking alternate options in conjunction with the Light Up Leeton Committee.

"Further, a number of impacts to traffic and pedestrian management will also need to be assessed to ensure both compliance and appropriate mitigation of any risks associated with the new design."
