The committee behind the walk of fame has been working hard behind-the-scenes to get the project up and running despite the challenges thrown in the mix in 2020.
The first inductees had been due to be announced last year at a special event, but the pandemic changed those plans.
We've had some really good applications.
- Tony Reneker
However, at the end of the year the path near the town's ovals and surrounding sporting facilities was laid and will soon be home to plaques recognising the first "hall of famers".
"We will induct five in the first year (in October 2021) and there will be two plaques that go in each of the squares that come off the footpath for people to stop and view," committee chairman Tony Reneker said.
"We had a good response last year when we put it out there that we wanted nominations.
"We've had some really good applications.
"The first five inducted will be quite elite sportspeople from Leeton who have represented at the highest level."
The idea behind the walk of fame is to honour and immortalize those Leeton residents who have excelled in their chosen code at a high level.
Names will be added to the walk of fame each year.
"We will be finalising who the first inductees are ... we've got a lot of applications," Reneker said.
"There was a really good response to the nominations. The criteria was put out there so the applications had to fit into that.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Council and the Leeton Soldiers Club have been really good supporters of the project."
Some of that included a nominee must have performed at their chosen sports/s at an elite level and preferably reached the highest level available for their chosen sport and/or; and must have represented Australia (or equivalent level) in a team or as an individual.
