Here at the Leeton Soldiers Club, we have been focused on cleaning up the mess that was left following the ram raid at the end of January.
On the morning of January 28 about 4.45am, I received a call to advise me that there had "been a ram raid at the club".
At the time it was raining (and I was still half asleep) and so in my head that translated to a scenario that was a lot less serious.
I assumed that perhaps someone had slipped off the roundabout on the corner and perhaps "bumped" the building.
Ram raids don't happen in small towns like ours.
But as I arrived at work about 15 minutes later, I was in total disbelief. It looked as though someone had literally taken a bite out of the building. It was shocking to see.
When we finally gained access to the building later that day, the extent of the damage became apparent - it looked like a bomb had gone off.
IN OTHER NEWS:
It was at that moment that the reality of closing our business hit me once again.
Despite having only been open about six months after our COVID closure, we were facing closure again. It was a sad day.
But over the last 33 days, we have worked tirelessly to repair the building and make it safe for our patrons.
We also used the opportunity to commence our greatly anticipated renovations, with some of the more invasive works having been done while we remained closed.
The Leeton Soldiers Club reopened on Monday and gosh it was so good to put my uniform back on.
While it is not quite business as usual while renovations continue, all areas are open and the beer is cold.
Be sure to come down and check us out when you can.
You will hardly recognise the place, but the sweat and tears we have experienced will all be worth it when the renovations are completed in coming months.
