The Murrumbidgee Local Health District has announced it will be handling the initial rollout of the COVID vaccine to healthcare workers in Leeton and across the region.

Wagga Base Hospital will be one of five "major vaccination hubs" in NSW, and will supply 30 satellite locations, including here in Leeton, where frontline workers and eventually residents will be able to get COVID jabs.

It is believed that location will be the Leeton Medical Centre.

MLHD Chief Executive Jill Ludford said "mobile teams" will distribute the vaccines from the Wagga hub to these satellite sites, but the exact date for this rollout is still unknown.

"It is a really exciting step in the evolution of this COVID-19 pandemic," Mrs Ludford said.

"We'll let you know when our date gets closer, as soon as we know from the Commonwealth Government."

Ms Ludford said MLHD staff had already begun training in administering the vaccine.

"An immense amount of planning has been overtaken by our teams over the past few months so that we know we are ready," she said.

"We have to obviously ensure we have the appropriate facilities for the storage and handling of this very precious vaccine and also ensure that we have appropriately trained and credentialed staff."

"We've had lots of opportunities to look at the lessons learnt and streamline our clinic as we open up here."

Australia's national rollout of the vaccine officially began last week, with hundreds of facilities across the country now administering the vaccine.

Those receiving the vaccine in this initial phase include frontline health care workers, aged care and disability staff, aged care and disability residents and quarantine and border workers.

Last week, a local medical professional said he was excited for the vaccine to bring "peace of mind" to then MIA.

The Federal Government has said it hopes every adult who wants to receive a vaccine will be able to do so by October.

Australia will receive 53.8 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine (50 million will be manufactured here) and 20 million doses of the Pzifer vaccine.
