The latest Australian Taxation Office (ATO) figures show more than 12,800 superannuation accounts have been orphaned from their rightful owners across the Riverina's postcodes with an average balance of more than $4300.

Wagga's 2650 postcode tops the leaderboard, with the city plus areas such as Bomen, Collingullie and Downside accounting for more than $20 million of the total unclaimed money.

The city's average unclaimed balance for unclaimed accounts was more than $5200.

The top 10 postcodes in Australia for unclaimed superannuation ranged from $63 million to $32 million.

Workers may have lost or unclaimed super if they have changed their name, moved jobs or changed address, or forgotten to update details with a super fund in the last few years

Farrer MP Sussan Ley said anyone who thought they might have money to be claimed, can go online to the MyGov website and check for lost super with the ATO.

"Local numbers indicate there are 3545 lost and unclaimed super accounts from the Griffith area, totalling over $10.07 million, and a further $2.8 million in Leeton," she said.

The 2720 postcode, including Red Hill, Talbingo, Gocup, Blowering, was also high on the list for the Riverina with $3.5 million in unclaimed money., and Junee's 2663 postcode had more than $2.2 million as of June 30 last year.

Ms Ley said it was "worth taking the time to check" with $13.8 billion in superannuation still unclaimed across Australia.

"In just a few clicks you could be boosting your super balance," she said.

"The ATO has done all the work for you. No need to search, no need to hand over information. If you have lost or unclaimed super, it will be sitting there waiting for you."

"If nothing out of the ordinary appears, your super is up-to-date and in order," Ms Ley said.

The ATO section of MyGov has a 'Manage My Super' to allow workers to check for lost and unclaimed superannuation.
