Last Wednesday night, we held our weekly meeting in the Roxy Theatre supper room, joining the cast of Henry V in a deep dive script-reading session.
This collaboration was very special experience, as writers listened to the whole play read through by the actors, and discussed aspects of character and narrative, sharing responses and ideas for how to deliver the lines to tell the story, and embody the characters.
This gathering is the start of another partnership, between our writers and future theatre, film and performance projects that will be born out of the Roxy redevelopment, and it was a real privilege to be allowed into the intimate space of the Henry V company in the thick of the countdown to opening night.
Everyone needs to buy tickets to this wonderful show.
In another theatrical move, founding writers' collective member, Leonie Napier, is busy developing a fantastic original murder-mystery script for a surprise gala event at our wonderful Australian Art Deco Festival in Leeton in July.
Based on historical details about the life and times of Leeton and its people and visitors, this murder mystery will be performed by local personalities taking the roles of some very colourful characters.
Leonie is working with other members of the writers collective to finalise her script and start developing the show.
Three of our members, Ben Smith, Christie Talbot and Lauren Forner each have their debut poetry collections nearing publication under the Riverina Press Inc banner.
IN OTHER NEWS:
With outstanding design by graphic designer Kimberley Skeers - the proof copies will soon be ready for sign-off and then we will be eagerly awaiting printing and a big launch celebration event.
This is a wonderful achievement for these three writers, as individuals, and for our town, as a creative hub and place of story-telling and culture. Such an exciting time.
Kat Vella and Lauren Forner, along with Kim, are also busily working on the first edition of the wonderful Mona magazine - for rural women by rural women. I am so proud of this team for what they are working to achieve in giving rural women a voice to tell their diverse stories. Submissions are now open.
Group member Jason Richardson is having great success with his audio-visual narrative immersive events - one with a stellar astronomical and lunar theme (on April 2) and another upcoming screening of classic film, The Lost World.
See Jason Richardson Events for details.
Finally, we are very excited that our second collection of writing by members of the collective is also nearing completion.
A big thank you to Western Riverina Arts and Camille Whitehead for supporting us to get this out. A sneak peek of the cover gives us a sense of the special product to come.
But amidst these specific achievements, a special recognition of every single person, for all your big and small contributions to our group and our town. Thank you to everyone.
Feel free to come along any Wednesday night, to the Leeton Museum and Gallery and join our fellowship of writers and storytellers. Share in the warmth and the trust we have built.
