Jack Walton, 26, has been assisted by Kurrajong Supported Living since 2017, with the hopes of living independently and improving his own abilities.
Going above and beyond, the young Leeton man has kicked his goals out of the park after successfully enrolling in a STEPS program through the University of Central Queensland which will lead on to a Diploma of Digital Media.
Always having his mind made up on the path he wanted to take, Jack said he "just never knew how to go about it".
"I would give TAFE courses a go from time to time to add to my merit, but I always felt like something was missing," he said.
"You can imagine my surprise when Mum and I found a digital media course through CQU."
While not an easy road, Jack said he even surpassed his own expectations.
"In all honesty, I never thought it would happen," he said.
"I'd tried a few times in the past to no avail, but with support from my family and Kurrajong, I eventually managed to make a start."
That start will hopefully lead in to the aspiring creator's dream career.
"I'm looking forward to the day when I can take that next step and improve my skills in the process," Jack said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"When all is said and done, I'll be looking to start my dream career as an illustrator and animator, while throwing in my skills as a writer."
The biggest challenge along the way was finding a work-life balance, according to Jack.
"Getting into university was a bit of a process for sure," he said.
"But the hardest challenge for me would be the time you have to commit to studies.
"Whenever I fell behind, I'd become anxious and more frantic to hand my work in, so I have to make sure I get enough downtime."
For others doubting their abilities, Jack said he had a few words of advice to share.
"I would say keep trying and you should eventually find a way, and don't be afraid to ask for help," he said.
"One last tidbit of advice, and I know this from experience, is that new courses are introduced from time to time and some of them are online, so keep looking until you find one that's right for you."
