Last Sunday, over 40 volunteers from Leeton, Narrandera and surrounding areas put on their gardening gloves at the Narrandera Wetlands to help plant ground-layer native shrubs, which provide food and shelter for smaller animals such as birds and insects.

Whilst National Tree Day is on August 1, Glenn Currie from Narrandera Landcare previously told The Irrigator that; "planting at this time of the year gives more time to the seedlings to establish a bit before the brunt of winter hits."

This will subsequently ensure a better survival rate for the seedlings.

Approximately 1,200 seedlings that were germinated and supplied by Narrandera Landcare and Murrumbidgee Field Naturalists were planted on the day.

Narrandera Pizzeria also generously provided fresh pizzas and beverages for all the volunteers after their kind efforts.

"It was great to see the community come together to support the environment and promote biodiversity," said Peter Cirillo from Leeton Toyota.
