A section of Palm Avenue near the Leeton High School ovals and the town's TAFE campus was identified by Leeton Shire Council as being in desperate need of work.
As a result, council approved rehabilitation of the area in the 2020-21 delivery program and operational plan. The works, which commenced last month, are being jointly funded by Roads to Recovery grant funding, as well as council's own sealed road rehabilitation funds.
"During the preliminary scoping and investigation, the kerb and gutter along this section of road was also determined to be severely deteriorated with ponding of water in rain events," council's manager of roads and drainage Chris Lashbrook said.
"The deterioration is a combination of age and underlying tree roots from the large mature gum trees that were in proximity to the back of the kerb.
"These trees were also found to be aged and in poor health.
"The trees have been removed and replaced as part of the project as communicated by council to the community last month."
The road will receive a similar treatment to the Acacia Avenue rehabilitation works completed a few months ago.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The works involve removal of unsuitable material and mechanical stabilisation with Tensar Triax mesh, before the construction of a full depth granular pavement over the top to serve into the future.
"This will be completed with a bitumen wearing course once new kerb installation is completed and road surface final trimmed to heights," Mr Lashbrook said.
"It is expected the project will continue until early or mid July, with dates yet to be set for bitumen sealing.
"This will be based on weather and pavement moisture contents."
