Now, another property in the seaside enclave will go under the hammer on August 7.
The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home at 52a Paterson Road, Coalcliff has a price guide of $2.2 million.
Sydney-based Ramesh Sathiah and wife Abigail bought the property nearly three years ago and have been utilising it as a weekender/Airbnb rental.
"We've got some friends who live in the area," he said.
"We work in music and advertising, and there's been quite a few creative types going down to that part of the Illawarra."
Mr Sathiah said while Coalcliff and surrounding suburbs had once flown under the radar, they were being increasingly viewed as an option for prospective buyers, especially due to more opportunities for Sydney-siders to work from home.
"We love the area," he said.
"It's just magic - having the amazing escarpment behind you, it's so secluded... It's such a unique spot, a hidden gem."
Sales in Coalcliff are relatively rare, but the two transactions recorded so far in 2021, both in February, point to strong demand.
28 Paterson Road sold for $3,400,000, according to Pricefinder, while 26 Paterson Road changed hands for $4,715,000 - a suburb price record.
Mr Sathiah said they were initially planning to retain a place in the Illawarra for the long-term, but were selling in order to relocate to a bigger family home.
The home is a 150-metre walk down to the sand or sea pool at Coalcliff Beach.
The layout separates the living areas from the sleeping quarters, with two living spaces and four rooms over three floors.
The self-contained ground level offers multiple possibilities including holiday letting, long-term lease or teenage/in-law accommodation.
Mr Sathiah described the house as having a beach aesthetic, adding that it "looks small on the outside, but is big on the inside".
"It's a small piece of land (170 square metres), essentially it's a subdivision... But they've build this bit of a 'Tardis' of a house," Mr Sathiah said.
"It's very modern - thermally efficient, it's got solar power, double-glazed windows."
Selling agent, McGrath Thirroul's Vanessa Denison-Pender said the tightly held suburb of Coalcliff had long been in demand among buyers.
"It does attract Sydney buyers with big money," she said.
"There's not a lot of homes there, it's got a really nice ocean pool, and it's got amazing views of the escarpment.
"People seem to like that it's a little more remote and a little more private."
