Making the most of their obvious physical advantage, the United States slowly crushed an Australian defence that held firm until midway through the second half.
After leading 12-0, they finally succumbed and conceded again when a sloppy pass hit the ground in a loss that sees Australia finish second in their pool.
That sets up a quarter-final clash with Fiji at 7pm (AEST) and a likely semi-final date with New Zealand, who have dominated for the past three years, on Saturday, if they progress.
Earlier Sharni Williams continued her fine tournament, running a nice line back against the grain to hit a gap for the first well-earned try.
Demi Hayes was then set free down the left wing by Charlotte Caslick after more valiant defence forced a turnover.
But, battered, bruised and bloody, they were unable to hold firm as converted tries to Cheta Emba and Abby Gustaitis put the United States ahead.
