Leeton Shire Council currently has a draft plan of public exhibition outlining many exciting plans to reinvigorate this area in a bid to make it more usable, functioning and attractive to visitors and tourists alike.
The master plan that is available for the community to provide feedback on allows for continuous public access along the river frontage, suitable play activities for children, the removal of perimeter fencing, toilet facilities, signage, better car parking and more areas for recreation.
IN OTHER NEWS:
There will be more barbecue facilities and picnic areas and the idea of a suspension bridge Sturt Canal has also been included in the list of potential ideas.
If this concept as presented was to be adopted by council, it could cost up to $3 million, depending on community feedback.
The proposed funding strategy would be a mix of council, partner agencies and grant funding and may have to be staged.
Council has already started applying for grant funding to assist the project.
"This price tag may be higher than what we can immediately achieve, so it is important for council to understand what the community would like developed in the short, medium and long-term," deputy mayor George Weston.
"We really want to encourage residents to 'have your say before any concepts or any funding commitments get locked in."
Cr Weston said he and many others in the community would remember spending many hours with young families at the weir over the years.
He hopes by revitalising the area it will again become an attractive place for residents and tourists to visit.
Council held an information session for the community on Thursday night, with a second planned for Saturday in Pine Avenue.
Residents can also visit council's "have your say" online portal to view the plans and provide feedback.
Written submissions can also be made to council before 5pm on August 27.
