During Thursday morning's press conference, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced all of regional NSW would remain subject to stay-at-home orders until at least September 10.

It comes as a blow to the community as a whole who had been hopeful the lockdown would end as planned on Saturday.

The news is also not what the business community had been hoping to hear as they are among those who have been hit hardest by the lockdown rules and regulations.

With that in mind, Leeton shire residents have again been urged to support business owners wherever possible - whether it's buying from stores that are open, utilising their takeaway and delivery options or just touching base with a closed business to see how they are doing.

The lockdown extension came as the state recorded its highest daily total of COVID-19 cases to date with 1029 new locally acquired cases.

More than 151,000 tests were carried out across the state on Wednesday, breaking the record 149,000 tests and the nation's highest daily tally of the pandemic the previous day.

The majority of the 1029 cases to 8pm Wednesday, announced by premier Gladys Berejiklian on Thursday morning, were concentrated in metropolitan Sydney. Western Sydney Local Health District alone recorded 403 cases, NSW Health said.

The Sydney local government areas comprise 80 per cent of cases.

The focus continues to remain on getting vaccinated with those in Leeton shire urged to book an appointment to do so as soon as they possibly can.
