It has been more than two years since then Member for Murray Austin Evans announced a $2.5 million upgrade to the hospital's emergency department, but it now appears work will soon get underway.

Tenders for the various areas of the work have been lodging their quotes for the jobs on offer, with the Murrumbidgee Local Health District expected to announce the successful contractors in the coming weeks.

The $2.5 million is coming from the NSW Budget.

A statement from Murrumbidgee Local Health District gave an indication of where the project was currently up to.

"Once the tenders are evaluated and the contract awarded, the engaged builders will commence their planning," the statement said.

"Construction is expected to commence on site in November.

"The project is expected to be completed by June 30, 2022."

This particular revamp at the hospital is expected to involve:

- The upgrade, expansion and reconfiguration of the hospital emergency department.

- Realignment of public and staff access to the hospital to improve circulation and security to meet new standards.

- Upgrades to clinical spaces and improvements to public and patient flows in the inpatient unit.

The upgrade comes as residents continue to push for a doctor to be permanently located at the hospital in bid to alleviate pressure on current staff.

Many residents have spoken about their experiences when presenting to the hospital, saying the lack of a doctor upon presentation can be a frightening experience.
