Big Brothers Big Sisters Australia (BBBSA) program currently runs programs across Victoria, the Australian Capital and across Greater Sydney and has its eyes set on the Riverina following a series of youth suicides.
Data released last year by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare also found that in Griffith alone, suicide was the 18th most common cause of death and accounted for 1.3 percent of all deaths.
Member for Murray, Helen Dalton said she 'welcomed' the program to the region.
"It is clear that there is a lack of ongoing one on one support for vulnerable young people," Mrs Dalton said.
"Given the very high rate of youth suicide in the Griffith and Leeton areas, it would be great to get this initiative off the ground."
BBBSA NSW State Manager Alexandra Radcliffe said the program was an avenue to advocate for youth in regional and rural communities.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"By connecting a young person with a positive role model we don't just support the young person, but offer support to their families, teachers and community," Mrs Radcliffe said.
"Our mentors offer a bridge, so that young people don't have to feel alone or isolated and can turn to a trustworthy adult for support."
And whilst BBBSA have already recruited a number of volunteer mentors, and have a good skill base to launch in the region, community support is vital to get the program on its feet.
"They really need funding to employ organisers and set up an office either in Griffith or in Leeton," Mrs Dalton said.
More information about the program can be found here.
