Leeton Shire Council has launched a new road safety campaign, which is targeting speeding on residential streets.

The campaign, led by road safety officer Stephanie Puntoriero, will aim to have the community involved in tackling speeding on residential streets.

"Council takes complaints about speeding in our residential streets seriously, so we have developed visual signage to help remind people to slow down in our local streets," Mrs Puntoriero said.

Streets included in the program will have electronic message boards, council speed advisory boards and non-permanent corflute signage displayed throughout the campaign.

Residents are also able to nominate their street for inclusion in the project.

"It can be difficult to change driver behaviour, but through this program we're hoping to make a difference in our community," Mrs Puntoriero said.

From 2015 to 2019, 22 per cent of the 95 crashes in the shire were a direct result of speed.

Thirty per cent of these were on roads with a speed limit of 60 km/h or less.

Streets that are included in this year's program will receive a letter from council with details of the campaign and a survey.

The survey will then provide information about speeding behavior and concerns in our community. At the completion of the program, a register of streets will be created and used for future programs to target speeding on roads.

In addition, NSW Police will be monitoring speeding on the designated streets.

Police have also warned residents they will be fined should be they be found to speeding.

The idea of the campaign is to not only promote safer driving, but with the weather starting to warm up and more people and children out and about, to avoid any serious accidents and injuries from occurring on these residential roads.
