Cr Reneker was elected by his fellow councillors on Wednesday evening.
It was a tight battle for the mayoral role, with councillor George Weston the only other nominee for the position.
In the end, a secret ballot where all councillors cast their decision, had Cr Reneker come out on top by one vote.
He replaces the long-serving Emeritus Mayor Paul Maytom, who retired prior to the recent local government election.
An election for deputy mayor was also held at Wednesday night's meeting, with councillors Michael Kidd and Tracey Morris both throwing their hat into the ring.
In the end, it was fourth time lucky for Cr Kidd who was voted in by his peers.
Cr Kidd has contested the deputy mayor position on four other occasions, which has been held by Cr Weston for many years.
Two times in the past Cr Kidd has been defeated for the position by the draw of the hat.
Wednesday night's meeting was the first time the newly-elected councillors had gotten together after the local government election results were finalised earlier this week.
Elected this time around with Crs Reneker, Kidd, Weston and Morris was Paul Smith, Tony Ciccia, Sandra Nardi and the two new faces of Krystal Maytom and Matt Holt.
The group officially took their oath of office on the night and will now represent the community for the next three years.
Cr Reneker said he was honoured to not just be returned by the voters of the community, but to be elevated to the top job by his fellow councillors.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"I'm still in a bit of shock actually," Cr Reneker told the meeting. "I'm really, really honoured.
"On what I would like to achieve ... I want to hold government agencies to account.
"Whether it's health, police.
"We need to make them accountable to Leeton."
Cr Reneker said the elected group would be putting their best foot forward to achieving the very best outcomes for the shire.
