A ballot was conducted at Wednesday night's meeting for the election of mayor and deputy mayor, with George Weston elected unopposed for the latter. While it was an ordinary ballot, it was deemed "secret", with the number of votes received by councillors Maytom and Valenzisi unable to be made public.
Cr Maytom will sit as mayor for the next year, bringing his total amount of years in the top job to nine-and-a-half.
This year ahead also marks his 26th year as a councillor, which is one year less than longest-serving councillor Jack Washington, who served as a councillor for 27 years.
"It's been another big year and I thank councillors and council staff for their support," Cr Maytom said.
"When I look at the history of Leeton, I recognise the work our forefathers have done to get us where we are today.
"I think that's always the main crux ... one council does not achieve everything on its own because it's the building blocks of the past that help you.
"I like to look back and see how far Leeton has progressed ... if you want to be a councillor you've got to do it for your love of the town and the community.
"Everyone in this current council deserves a pat on the back."
Cr Maytom believes it will be another big year ahead with the issues of water and the future of local government to be at the top of the priority list.
In congratulating Cr Maytom on his success, Cr Valenzisi said he would have the full support of all councillors in the year ahead.
Cr Weston thanked his fellow councillors for placing their faith in him.
"I hope we can go on to do bigger and better things," he said.
"We are all equals here and we all bring different things to the table for this council."
