The return of students means the 40km/h school zone speed limits will be in operation again on gazetted school days, between 8am and 9.30am, and 2.30pm and 4pm.
Leeton Shire Council road safety and traffic officer Sandra Robinson has asked drivers to be aware of school zone signs, pay attention to school crossings and watch out for children.
"The safety of children around our schools is a key community concern," Mrs Robinson said. "One of the biggest issues in school zones is drivers not parking safely and causing a hazard to pedestrians around schools.
"'No parking' and 'no stopping' areas are put in place for safety reasons so they should be observed at all times.
"Drivers dropping off children at or on school crossings or school bus zones should be mindful of the risk they pose to other children in the area. These offences also offer heavy fines."
Over the coming months police will be targeting speeding, parking and other offences within school zones.
Traffic offences in school zones attract increased fines and demerit points.
