Yanco-Wamoon played their final match of the season at home on Sunday and proved again it should have been them playing in the finals series this season.
The Hawks ended up easily accounting for the Panthers 44-10.
It was an up and down year for the Hawks, who likely would have made the finals should some results have gone their way.
Despite the top five being out of reach before kick-off, the Hawks played like their season was still alive to beat one of the premiership contenders.
Yanco-Wamoon trailed 10-0 early but a decision to attack Black and Whites on the fringes reaped big dividends in the second half.
Coach Simon Watson commended his side for turning up and giving the game their all.
“I was really impressed with the boys and their effort,” he said.
“I really couldn’t have asked for anything more.
“We didn’t want to give Black and Whites an easy game.
“It’s disappointing we’re not contesting the finals because we definitely have potential.
“If a couple of results had of gone our way this season we probably would have been right up there.”
Sunday’s game was the last as coach for Watson.
Next year the first grade side will be taken over by Glenn Dumbrell and Tuki Jackson.
Watson plans to still attend games where possible and be part of the club’s committee.
“I’ll definitely miss it,” Watson said.
“I won’t miss turning up to some training nights and not having many blokes there, but that is all part of it.
“I’ve been coaching for 26 years. I really enjoy it.
“I know Glenn and Tuki will do a great job and hopefully get the boys to finals next year.
“I really rate Glenn as a player and leader.
“He is one of the best that I’ve seen during my time as a coach.”
