Roz Thompson, Craig and Colleen Willis, Debbie and Robert Beer and Michael and Helen Collins are once more participating in the Great Escape rally in aid of cystic fibrosis.
The group have been taking part for many years and were looking forward to the trek ahead.
In preparing to hit the road, the group had their cars blessed during a short service in Mountford Park last Wednesday, conducted by Father Neru.
Mr Willis said it had been a hard slog in the lead up to this year’s event.
“We’ve been doing a lot of fund-raising in the lead up again,” he said.
“Leeton has always been generous with us and it’s been no exception this year.”
The rally and attracts more than 40 cars each year, with over 150 participants.
The Great Escape has forged a unique identity within the rally industry while raising funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis.
Mr Willis said about $16,000 had been raised by the Leeton residents that are taking part.
“That’s a really good effort,” he said.
“I think the awareness is out there of why we do the rally and what the money goes towards.
“We’ve been doing it for so many years.
“People know more about CF now and they are always happy to help us out.”
This year’s rally officially got underway on Monday in Kiama.
From there the ultimate goal will be reaching Byron Bay via the “back of Bourke” and everywhere in between.
Ms Thompson was hoping for good weather along the way.
“I think it’s going to be pretty wet in some areas, but that makes the drive more challenging and fun,” she said.
“Hopefully we can get on those back roads and have a good time.”
All of the Leeton participants agreed there were many highlights to taking part each year.
“It’s one big family,” Mrs Willis said. “We get to catch up with everyone and know we’re all helping out a good cause at the same time.”
