Hanwood FC were this year’s victors, but the young United players could take comfort in the fact they gave their all for the full 90 minutes.
Tory Amato scored United’s lone goal in the first-half, with Leeton mounting an intense pressure campaign to prevent Hanwood from scoring.
United had numerous near misses at the goals and it was late in the game that Hanwood were gifted a penalty kick that converted into their first mark on the scoreboard.
They delivered another successful shot on goal with just minutes remaining in the game to defeat United, who were this year’s under 18s minor premiers.
The match was played in hot conditions, with United also suffering various injuries during the game.
Darcy Single came off in the second-half, which depleted the defence line. Sam Pirrottina appeared to be targeted all day and he too came off the field after a heavy knock.
He was able to rejoin his team mates on the field before he was brought down in another tackle, but managed to play on.
Despite the loss, coach Jarrod Sillis was proud of his team’s efforts.
“It was disappointing for them because they worked hard all season,” he said.
“They did play a really great game.
“Some calls didn’t go our way, but that late in the game we should have already finished them off.
“We had our chances, but that’s just how football goes sometimes.”
It was a solid season for the under 18s, with the side losing just three games for the year.
However, despite the grand final being done and dusted, the season isn’t quite over.
The team will head to Sydney on Sunday to play in the Champion of Champions competition, which is a state-wide event for all minor premiers to compete in.
Leeton United Football Club president Rod Harrison paid credit to the side following Sunday’s loss.
“On behalf of the club I would like to say how proud of the boys I am,” he said.
“They have been outstanding all year. Jarrod has done a outstanding job and I thank him for all his efforts."
