Abdol Samad Sorkheh migrated to Australia and Leeton from Iran and was the first person to be part of a naturalisation ceremony at the town’s Australia Day event in some time.
Last year Leeton Shire Council held many naturalisation ceremonies at its chambers in Chelmsford Place, but mayor Paul Maytom was pleased to be able to include the community in such an event.
“I do think it’s important for residents to be part of something like this,” he said.
“Abdol and his friends and family are here today and all very excited.”
Councillor Maytom presented Mr Sorkheh with his certificate of citizenship following the ceremony.
“Thank you so very much,” Mr Sorkheh said.
“I love Australia so much.”
Leeton shire community members, including Cr Maytom, have been working hard in the past 12 months to ensure refugees living in town are aided and helped when it is needed.
This has included putting on different events to help introduce them to the community and its residents.
