The awards were announced as part of the shire’s Australia Day official ceremony, with Sam Allen taking home the coveted Senior Sportsperson of the Year honour, while Daniel Guilford was named Junior Sportsperson of the Year.
Allen was recognised for his rugby union achievements, while Daniel was honoured for a big 12 months in the sport of roping.
Allen was picked in the ACT Brumbies under-20s rugby union team after many years of excelling on the field.
On accepting his award he was honoured to receive the title.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” Allen said. “I want to thank my parents and just the community for getting behind me.”
Guilford started off 2015 with a bang when he competed at the Big Show Team Roping event in Tamworth. In that competition he placed second and third, winning himself two new vehicles in the process.
As part of a strong Riverina contingent at the event, the 14-year claimed honours in the sevens team roping competition. Daniel was up against some strong competition in the junior section, but his big achievements were able to secure him the honour.
“I want to thank my mum and dad for always driving me to these events … they can be pretty far away,” he said.
“It’s a pretty big surprise to win.”
The sportsperson of the year awards are held annually as part of the Australia Day ceremony. Each of the nominees received a medal for their efforts.
Organising committee secretary Tony Reneker said judges found it tough to chose this year’s winners.
“It was very close and went right down to the wire,” he said.
“Sam has achieved a lot with his rugby union, while Daniel almost competed at a world level.
“It was just that he wasn’t old enough to attend the competition in Las Vegas. We had some really great nominees this year. They should be proud of their achievements.”
