While there was much to celebrate, club president Tony Roddy couldn’t go past one in particular.
“The highlight of the evening was bestowing Mayor Paul Maytom with a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition and the Rotary Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity,” he said.
“We also had the pleasure of honouring three men who have been with the club more than half its existence.”
The PHF award to Cr Maytom was recognition of the tremendous service he has given to the Leeton community through local government over a period of almost 30 years and the Humanity Award was for his strong humanitarian leadership in forming Friends of Luro, The Leeton Multicultural Group and making Leeton a Rotary Peace Community in 2012.
Bob Parsons, Harry Cockshaw and Peter Kelly have all been with the club for more than 37-and-a-half years with Parson the longest serving member at 47 years.
Mr Roddy said the experience that long-serving members brought was invaluable.
“When you ask a question or you need to now something, they’re always there to lend a helping hand,” he said.
Mr Roddy has only been with the Leeton club for 15 years, but already has a life-time of memories.
“I look back at the totality of the good the club has done in the community and you add that to all of the clubs worldwide,” he said. “It's a tremendous organisation that does so much good and a particular focus for our club is the work we do with the youth around Leeton.”
