Leeton’s Friends of Luro group has supported the area for many years.
It continues to donate funds towards certain projects, as well as helping to provide water filters, food storage bins, mosquito nets and student scholarships.
As an off-shoot to this, in August 2013, Katrina and Gen Tehan travelled to Luro with their late father Reece.
Mr Tehan was heavily involved with the Friends of Luro group and helped to establish the connection that continues to thrive today.
From that trip, a seed of something was planted in the sisters’ minds.
They decided to co-ordinate “homestay” travels and experiences to Luro that visitors can now take up.
Some Leeton shire residents have already done so.
Ten students from Finley are currently in Luro, participating in a five-day Timor Immersion Program.
When asked what made this Timor experience so unique, co-ordinator of the Finley group, Yasmin McGrath, described it as a trip to remember.
“Visiting the small community of Luro provides the young people of Finley with an opportunity to learn about the Timorese culture,” she said. “The homestay is the most unreal experience.
“You are living with a Timorese family, seeing life through their eyes, their stories and their experiences.”
With the sudden passing of Mr Tehan in October last year, his daughters have vowed to continue his work and passion for Luro and Timor Leste.
They will be running a Timor trekking and homestay this year from August 6 to 13.
The sisters said this year the program and itinerary catered to the interests, passions and connections of rural and farming people, making it a tour that will really interest the Riverina community.
The money generated through home hosting, meal preparation, guiding and facilitating community activities will continue to bring new money into the Luro community.
