IT HAS been a busy time for the Premier’s Challenge Debating stage five and four teams.
On June 6, the year 9 and 10 debating teams went to Coolamon where each team had debates against Yanco Agricultural High School and Coolamon Central School.
Even though some of the LHS debaters were inexperienced, the school won all debates.
The A and B team have to debate each other in order to determine the winner of the zone.
That team will then go on to debate in the quarter finals of the Riverina region.
On June 9, year 7 and 8 debating teams travelled to Narrandera for two debates.
As part of the audience for the year 8 debate, the year 7 students picked up some valuable skills from the older debaters.
Last year these girls were the stage four Riverina champions and went to Sydney for the state final.
Arguments from both the LHS A and B teams were convincing, so they won their debates. They have further debates against Temora and then Leeton High School A team against Leeton High School B team. This will determine the zone winners.

ON JUNE 9, 13 boys from years 7 to 10 travelled to Wagga Wagga’s Jubilee Park hockey complex to participate in the gala day for the CHS hockey knockout competition.
The Leeton High team consisted of Caleb Watson (goalie), Koby Eglinton, Hayden Mahalm, Cooper Newman, Christopher Ryan, Zac Fairweather, Kai Schmetzer, Rhett MacGregor, Mathew Axtill, Micheal Keech, Nathan Baulch, Junior Faoa and Travis Collins.
The boy’s first game was against Wagga High.
The Wagga High side had several highly skilled and agile players, with the team scoring a goal quickly after the commencement of the game. In spite of the superior skill of the Wagga High side, the Leeton High boys were not afraid to take the opposition on and were tenacious in defence.
Caleb Watson in goals stopped the opposition from scoring many times, and Koby Eglinton and Hayden Mahalm were also strong in their positions of left and right backs.
The game ended with Leeton High going down to Wagga High 9-1, with Mathew Axtill scoring in the final seven seconds of the game.
In game two, Leeton High was up against an experienced and very strong Tumut High team. Tumut took the match 11-0, but Junior Faoa shined in the left half position where he thwarted the opposition by breaking down play with several great tackles and feeding the ball up field for his attacking team mates.
The whole team showed enormous improvement in their game play - holding positions, marking opposition players, passing and communication. Overall, the Leeton boys showed great sportsmanship, and had fun, thoroughly enjoying the experience of playing on the smooth and fast synthetic turf field.
