Hot temperatures brings a warning

With summer now in full swing, those enjoying the shire’s swimming facilities have been encouraged to do so responsibility. 

With a recent spike in drownings across the state, residents have been urged not to become another statistic. 

The mercury is expected to climb to 36 degrees on Friday, 38 on Saturday and 40 on both Sunday and Monday. 

Overnight temperatures are expected to remain in the low to mid-20s. 

While many will seek out a pool, the Murrumbidgee River or the refuge of an air-conditioned lounge room, they should also be mindful of others. 

The Murrumbigee Local Health District has encouraged residents to check on the neighbours during hot days, particularly if they are elderly.

Director public health unit Tracey Oakman said while heat-related illness may affect anyone, certain groups are particularly vulnerable.

“Australians are accustomed to hot weather and generally consider themselves resilient to such conditions,” she said. 

“However, every year, hot weather and heat waves cause illness, hospitalisations and sometimes even deaths.

“During a heat wave, it is very important to stay in regular contact with your elderly friends, neighbours and relatives.”
