On Friday, February 17, students from St Mary’s School Yoogali, St Joseph’s School Narrandera, St Peter’s School Coleambally, St Joseph’s School Leeton and St Patrick’s School Griffith competed in the carnival at the Griffith Aquatic Centre.
There were many outstanding competitors but only the best of the best gained selection to the next level of the representative scene – the Wagga Diocesan Swimming Carnival.
It will be held at Leeton on Monday, February 27.
Katelyn Johnson from St Joseph’s Narrandera and Beth Lockwood from St Mary’s Yoogali went head-to-head all day with Katelyn narrowly winning the senior girls championship by one point.
Hayden Forner, Joshua Trotter – both from St Patrick’s Griffith – and Will Maguire from St Joseph’s Leeton battled hard all day with Hayden coming out on top and being named the senior boys champion.
In the 11 years girls, Emmerson Waide from St Patrick’s Griffith was the dominant swimmer as she won all her age events and came second in the open 100m freestyle – an effort that saw her claim the 11 years championship trophy.
Matthew Ellis from St Joseph’s Leeton won the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and the 50m backstroke to win the 11 years boys championship from Joseph Onley – also from St Joseph’s Leeton.
The junior girls age group was won by Maddi Luff from St Joseph’s Leeton who won three of her races and came second in two others.
Calan Nicholls from St Joseph’s Leeton dominated the junior boys age group and won all five of his events and was awarded the title of junior boys champion.
Haylee Bellato from St Peter’s Coleambally was the most successful swimmer from her school, winning the senior girls butterfly and coming third in senior girls 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke.
The organisers sent out a big thank you to to all the parents and teachers who assisted on the day and helped the carnival run smoothly.
